SUMMARY:Best Practices for Producing Print and Digital Content
DESCRIPTION:As e-books continue to grow more and more popular\, a print-focused production process just doesn’t work anymore. How can publishers alter and streamline their workflow for simultaneous print and digital production\, instead of creating e-books as an afterthought? What steps can be implemented early on that will aid in digital production and save time later? Is there a better way to prep a print file if you know it will be a fixed layout e-book vs. a reflowable e-book? Can things be implemented as early as Word? Is there software other than Word and Adobe products people could be using to streamline the print to digital workflow? \nWho better to ask than an e-book designer with a background in print books? As we enter the holiday season\, join us for a lively discussion about best practices for producing print and digital products that align with cutting-edge standards. \nPresenter\nLaura Brady is an old-school typesetter who re-purposed as an ebook developer a few years ago. A long history in print and design coupled with her new coding knowledge means that she is the right combination of right brain/left brain to survive the digital publishing revolution. You can connect with her on Twitter\, LinkedIn\, or via her Brady Type website

SUMMARY:Current Trends at Local Bookstores: Lunch with Minnesota Book Buyers
DESCRIPTION:Those who work in book publishing spend a lot of time thinking about—surprise!—readers. What are they looking for\, what are they reading now\, what haven’t they seen yet? What trends in the book market seem to be waning\, or emergent; what’s going to make a person choose that book from a full table of options? And how do we really\, in our region\, get a sense of this all in the moment? Who better to ask than some of the local bookstore owners and booksellers\, who see these narratives unfold in their own stores daily. \nAs we begin (already!) the climb into the fall and holiday season\, join us for a lively\, wide-ranging discussion about what area booksellers and book buyers have been seeing in their stores: what’s hot\, what’s not\, what’s trending and what’s slowing down. What seems to be working for publishers these days\, especially in terms of a relationship with bookstores and frontline staff? Or even\, what kinds of covers seem to be connecting with readers\, whether for fiction or non-fiction\, regional or national\, young adult or picture books. \nThere will be no shortage of potential topics\, so please lend your voice to a fun discussion with some of our area’s esteemed booksellers\, book buyers\, and store owners. \nPresenters\nJudith Kissner is the owner of Scout & Morgan Books in Cambridge\, Minnesota. In 2002 she opened her first bookstore\, Log Cabin Books\, and in 2007\, expanded and moved to her current location in the downtown Cambridge area. She has served on the Cambridge City-Wide Read Committee since its inception in 2008. \nMary Magers is part of the management team at Magers and Quinn Booksellers where they buy and sell new\, used\, antiquarian\, and remaindered books\, and where she has been in the business since before any of it was done on computers. Her responsibilities include overseeing inventory management of new books\, including purchasing\, marketing\, events\, and monitoring sales and returns. Katie McGinley is a manager and buyer at Wild Rumpus Books\, a children’s bookstore in Minneapolis. She is definitely a generalist\, reading and recommending books from all genres for kids of all ages\, but is a special fan of graphic novels for kids and teens. \nMartin Schmutterer is the general manager and front-list buyer at Common Good Books in Saint Paul. A bookseller with over twenty years of experience\, he has worked in chain stores and independents\, including the late-lamented Ruminator (nee Hungry Mind) and Bound to Be Read.

SUMMARY:Metadata Management: Processes and Best Practices for Publishers
DESCRIPTION:Building on a brief summary of metadata fundamentals\, this presentation will cover what happens when your metadata leaves your publishing house. Retailers and libraries — not just publishers — use many sources of metadata\, and some of these data feeds overwrite one another. Retailers also change the metadata that gets sent to them\, load data feeds at different rates\, and handle corrections differently. Participants can expect to come away with practical guidelines on creating\, distributing\, and updating the metadata for their books. \nPresenter\nLaura Dawson is Product Manager for Identifiers at Bowker\, the world’s leading provider of bibliographic information management solutions designed to help publishers\, booksellers\, and libraries better serve their customers. Previously\, Laura worked at the following companies: Firebrand\, Muze/Rovi\, SirsiDynix\, Barnes & Noble.com\, independent booksellers\, Bantam Spectra Books\, and Doubleday. Laura has also been an independent consultant to the publishing industry. \nHer clients have included Bowker\, McGraw-Hill Higher Education\, Cengage\, Audible\, Alibris\, Loyola Press\, Carson-Dellosa\, Chuckwalla\, Capstone Press\, and Book Industry Study Group.

SUMMARY:With a Little Help from My Friends: Editors\, Authors\, and the Art of Developmental Editing
DESCRIPTION:Everyone can see the finished product on bookstore shelves. Some see a manuscript as it makes its way towards a publisher. But between the submitted manuscript and the finished product\, some of the most intensive work publishers do with a book is also the most hidden. In some cases\, this work is a short process; in others\, it’s long and involved. \nEither way\, substantial developmental editing — and the relationship between author and editor — is a central ingredient in the lives of books\, publishers\, and readers. But in a time of increased workloads\, towers of manuscripts\, and fast-approaching deadlines\, the process of developmental editing can be a tricky one to master and carry out in a substantive yet efficient manner. \nJoin us for an opportunity to see onto the editor’s table and engage in discussion with three highly respected developmental editors working with nonfiction\, fiction\, and children’s literature. It’s a great opportunity to pick their brains and hear from them about good methods\, approaches\, considerations\, and the difficult choices that lie along the road that leads from the submission envelope to the new release table. \nPresenters\nPatricia M. Stockland is the Editor in Chief of Lerner Publishing Group. She has been an editor and author for the past fifteen years and holds an M.A. in Literature and a B.A. in English as well as minors in Spanish and European Studies. In addition to numerous poems\, scholarly articles\, and marketing pieces\, she has written more than sixty books for children and young adults\, garnering national and regional awards\, including a nomination as a MAGS scholar. \nAs the managing director at Milkweed Editions\, Patrick Thomas oversees marketing and promotion\, finance\, and acquires and edits books for the nonfiction list. He studied English and Environmental Studies at St. Olaf College. \nLinda White is a writer\, reader\, editor\, reviewer\, promoter\, and teacher. She has worked in publishing for 20 years in both editorial and marketing. She reviews regularly for Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. She runs BookMania\, offering services for authors and publishers\, and The Publishing Bones\, a website for writers. Her goal is always to help authors: to create their best work\, bring it to readers\, and be recognized for it. She is\, unabashedly\, a complete\, utter book freak.

SUMMARY:New Ventures in Book Publishing
DESCRIPTION:In the current book publishing climate\, authors\, publishers\, and distributors need to find innovative ways to reach readers and to gain visibility for their books. From fundraising for independent book projects on Kickstarter.com\, to rebranding and creating new imprints\, to partnering with other businesses to increase distribution\, this panel will discuss creative new ventures in publishing that have proven to be successful for local authors\, publishers\, and booksellers (and even coffee houses). \nPanelists\nJoy Dey and Anna Skarie\, founders of SWAK (Sit With a Kid) Publishing\, recently successfully funded the printing of an interactive DoU Adventure book Just Another Monday through a project on Kickstarter.com. \nJoy Dey\, graphic designer and art director for Old Turtle and The Quiltmaker’s Gift\, is the author of Agate: What Good Is a Moose?\, winner of the Independent Publisher’s Book Award (IPPY) for Best Children’s Book 2007 and the Midwest Bookseller’s Choice Award for Best Children’s Picture Book 2008\, among several others. \nAnna Skarie\, a web designer and artist with an advanced 3D arts degree\, has worked on everything from corporate sites to computer games. \nMark Levine is the founder and CEO of Hillcrest Media Group\, Inc.\, which publishes its own books — including Levine’s The Fine Print of Self-Publishing\, now in its fourth edition — and provides book publishing\, marketing\, printing and distribution services for authors and independent presses. Hillcrest recently launched CoffeeandBooks.com\, which pairs coffee house partners with publishers and sells books online and in 65 Dunn Bros. locations. Scheduled in 2013 is the relaunch of Published.com (the Match.com for authors and bloggers) and the launch of Fiction.com\, which combines elements of CoffeeandBooks.com and Published.com with partnerships with independent book stores and MFA programs. \nNancy Tuminelly\, co-founder of Mighty Media\, a book packaging and interactive technology company\, also became the publisher of Scarletta\, a local independent publisher\, distributed by PGW/Perseus\, in 2012. Scarletta\, founded in 2005 as a publisher of adult titles\, spent the last year rebranding its face and mission\, creating new imprints\, developing targeted and focused marketing strategies and establishing a trade partnership with Minneapolis’ Abdo Publishing Company to better reflect its growing emphasis on children’s titles.
