SUMMARY:Reaching New Readers: Marketing & Sales for Bookstores and School Libraries
DESCRIPTION:School libraries often work with wholesalers\, independent bookstores\, and major chains to stock their shelves for students. Publishers’ marketing and sales initiatives can play a huge role in getting the latest and greatest books into young readers’ hands. \nJoin us for a panel discussion featuring some of the Twin Cities’ most prominent book buyers as they discuss ways authors and publishers alike can effectively work with independent bookstores and educators to get books into readers’ hands. \n\nWhat marketing pieces are most effective from publishers\nHow indie bookstores work as liaisons between publishers and educators\nHow books are used in classrooms and what tools publishers can provide to get children and young adults excited about reading\nMajor trends with young readers\n\nPresenters\nGary Mazzone is the Outreach & Sales Director at Magers & Quinn Booksellers. In this position\, he builds and creates partnerships\, and helps organizations with their bulk purchases of books. Before starting at Magers & Quinn\, he worked at Borders Books as the District Event & Sales Manager for seven and a half years. With both of these careers\, he has been surrounded by many creative pieces of work and uses his creative talents to connect books to others. \nCarrie Zelin Johnson\, M.Ed.\, is the Director of Early Education for Way to Grow. She has 20 years of experience through parenthood\, skills therapy\, home visiting\, as well as volunteer and consultant work. She considers herself to be a strong advocate for issues regarding school readiness\, special needs\, and family and community engagement. For the last 13 years\, she has dedicated her career to relationship-based interventions and professional development through training and coaching with an emphasis on language\, literacy\, creativity\, and the arts. \nAshley Leary decided to be a teacher when she was in fourth grade and never changed her mind! She is starting her seventh year at Partnership Academy and is currently the school’s academic coordinator and a master teacher. Prior to joining the administration team\, Mrs. Leary taught both sixth grade and third grade. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in education from Hamline University. She also completed her ESL certificate from Hamline. \nBelle Nelson is currently the Media Director at Thomas Jefferson High School in Bloomington\, Minnesota. Previously a University Instruction & Information Literacy Librarian\, Belle is in her seventh year as a librarian. She loves all libraries — public\, academic\, school. But there is a special place in her heart for people who haven’t given up spinning on their office chairs. She finds the majority of those in the World of K-12. Belle also serves as adjunct faculty in the Normandale Community College Library\, where she works at reference\, instruction\, and collection development.

SUMMARY:Contracts\, Rights\, & Chaos: Practical Challenges Facing Publishers\, Authors\, Agents\, and Freelancers
DESCRIPTION:Contracts have never been simple in the book industry\, but in the digital era\, they’re more complicated than ever. Manuscripts are only the beginning. Photos\, fonts\, freelancers\, and fifteen flavors of ebook can and do make getting folks “to sign on the line which is dotted” a huge challenge. This discussion will focus on some of the day-to-day challenges of managing and making use of contracted content and other IP. What does it take to get a contract done these days? And once it is done\, how are publishers\, authors\, and agencies tracking the contracts grants and restrictions in a rapidly changing marketplace? Join us as we hear from professionals on the front line and from attendees who want to share their questions and experiences with contract management. \nPanelists\nMelissa Brodin\, Contracts Manager at Lerner Publishing Group. Melissa oversees all contracts\, rights\, and permissions for LPG. Tara Warren\, Vice President and Director of Information Technology at Lerner Publishing Group. Tara oversees IT operations at LPG\, including the implementation of various software solutions for managing rights and permission for content and other IP assets. \nDawn Frederick\, Agent and Owner of Red Sofa Literary. Dawn brings a broad knowledge of the book business to the table-with multiple years of experience as a bookseller in the independent\, chain\, and specialty stores; an editor for a YA publisher; a published nonfiction author; and an agent associate literary agent at Sebastian Literary Agency in 2002 (before Red Sofa Literary was established). \nLaurie Harper\, Author Biz Consulting. Laurie has over 30 years of experience in publishing and is known to editors\, agents\, and authors alike. She is a published author\, former small press publisher\, literary agent for over 25 years\, and now a business consultant for writers. SUMMARY:New Ventures in Book Publishing
DESCRIPTION:In the current book publishing climate\, authors\, publishers\, and distributors need to find innovative ways to reach readers and to gain visibility for their books. From fundraising for independent book projects on Kickstarter.com\, to rebranding and creating new imprints\, to partnering with other businesses to increase distribution\, this panel will discuss creative new ventures in publishing that have proven to be successful for local authors\, publishers\, and booksellers (and even coffee houses). \nPanelists\nJoy Dey and Anna Skarie\, founders of SWAK (Sit With a Kid) Publishing\, recently successfully funded the printing of an interactive DoU Adventure book Just Another Monday through a project on Kickstarter.com. \nJoy Dey\, graphic designer and art director for Old Turtle and The Quiltmaker’s Gift\, is the author of Agate: What Good Is a Moose?\, winner of the Independent Publisher’s Book Award (IPPY) for Best Children’s Book 2007 and the Midwest Bookseller’s Choice Award for Best Children’s Picture Book 2008\, among several others. \nAnna Skarie\, a web designer and artist with an advanced 3D arts degree\, has worked on everything from corporate sites to computer games. \nMark Levine is the founder and CEO of Hillcrest Media Group\, Inc.\, which publishes its own books — including Levine’s The Fine Print of Self-Publishing\, now in its fourth edition — and provides book publishing\, marketing\, printing and distribution services for authors and independent presses. Hillcrest recently launched CoffeeandBooks.com\, which pairs coffee house partners with publishers and sells books online and in 65 Dunn Bros. locations. Scheduled in 2013 is the relaunch of Published.com (the Match.com for authors and bloggers) and the launch of Fiction.com\, which combines elements of CoffeeandBooks.com and Published.com with partnerships with independent book stores and MFA programs. \nNancy Tuminelly\, co-founder of Mighty Media\, a book packaging and interactive technology company\, also became the publisher of Scarletta\, a local independent publisher\, distributed by PGW/Perseus\, in 2012. Scarletta\, founded in 2005 as a publisher of adult titles\, spent the last year rebranding its face and mission\, creating new imprints\, developing targeted and focused marketing strategies and establishing a trade partnership with Minneapolis’ Abdo Publishing Company to better reflect its growing emphasis on children’s titles.

SUMMARY:May 2012 MBPR Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:“So frequently elided in the discussions of the value of legacy publishing and whether it is worth an effort to preserve it\, are the investments publishers make in books that would simply not be written if they didn’t.”\n—Mike Shatzkin\, Founder & CEO of The Idea Logical Company\, and the industry blog “The Shatzkin Files”\n\n  \nBook industry professionals\, from publishers to primary review outlets\, self-publishing platform representatives to librarians\, have plenty of opinions and outlooks on the controversial\, yet growing\, avenue of self-publishing in the marketplace. We read about it weekly in both our trade publications and in the popular media\, articles questioning the efficacy or necessity of traditional (often referred to as legacy) publishing. \nDo authors need us now that anyone can self-publish with retailers like Amazon? What does all this new content mean to the selling landscape\, which is already populated with more books than readers could ever possibly discover? Whether it be via Amazon’s direct publishing program\, Lightning Source\, Lulu\, or the growing number of self-publishing platforms and opportunities\, many of us are trying to address and assess how self-publishing’s increasing influence in today’s retail environment is affecting our own traditional publishing businesses. What methods or initiatives can we utilize to counter its effects? How may we use it to our advantage by enhancing our core publishing programs? What can we learn from each other’s experiences? \nCome and listen to an expert panel to discuss answers to these questions and more. \nPanelists\nCevin Bryerman\, VP and Publisher of Publishers Weekly\, our industry’s primary magazine serving the trade. Cevin was Associate Publisher from 2005 to 2010\, and previously was Director of Finance for Reed Business Information from 1987 to 2005. PW recently announced a partnership with Vook; under PW Select+\, authors receive all the benefits of PW Select as well as a host of options for using Vook’s e-book creation and publishing platform. \nTom Kerber\, Chief Publishing Executive of Beaver’s Pond Press. Tom has over 30 years’ experience as a business executive and entrepreneur in diverse industries. Founded in 1998 by Milt “Beaver” Adams\, Beaver’s Pond Press has assisted over 600 independent authors to publish their books by providing a full range of publishing services that focus on mentoring the author through every step of the publishing process. Beaver’s Pond Press books are published in every genre and have won numerous book awards in the last few years. \nJenny Martin\, librarian for Duncanville ISD\, one of the largest school districts in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Jenny is also a district trainer for Design 4 Profound Learning\, a staff development initiative to develop educators and bring 21st Century Learning into the classroom. When she’s not in the library\, she’s writing book reviews\, teaching Young Adult books for the University of Texas at Arlington\, or plugging into the virtual library and publishing community. A member of ALA\, TLA\, YART\, and AASL\, Jenny has presented at conventions such as TCEA/ISTE and DFW Writers’ Conference. She will be participating via Skype.
