DESCRIPTION:Cultivating an inclusive culture is a priority for many companies. But what are the steps we need to take to accomplish this goal? And how do companies evaluate DEI training and ensure its longevity? \nIn MBPR’s January webinar\, Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in Hiring and Retaining Employees\, keynote speaker Andrew Williams will discuss ways companies can develop and improve DEI policies\, especially in relation to the hiring and retention of employees. He will also describe ways to proactively source candidates from underrepresented communities and promote diversity in job postings. \nFor twenty-five years\, Andrew Williams has worked at the intersections of cultural anthropology\, educational equity leadership\, community-based learning\, and global education to advance racial justice\, environmental justice\, food security\, and health equity in the United States and abroad. Williams has served as faculty at DePauw University\, as Director of the Posse Foundation\, and as Executive Director of the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs. Before his arrival at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation\, Andrew was Assistant Vice-Chancellor at the University of Minnesota Rochester providing strategic leadership for efforts to center access\, equity\, and public health in the university’s vision of health sciences education. As the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s first Director of DEI\, Andrew leads the execution of the organization’s DEI strategy\, including efforts to build an inclusive and diverse workforce\, expand access to treatment services\, and advance health equity. \nThis webinar is $5 for MBPR members and students and $15 for nonmembers. SUMMARY:Webinar: An Introduction to Data Privacy
DESCRIPTION:Join MBPR for a dive into data privacy with our keynote speaker Claire Cucchi. Individuals have always been concerned about data privacy\, and many countries around the world view data privacy as a fundamental human right. It’s why we keep important documents in a safe\, put locks on file cabinets\, and shred our personal documents. But what about the information we share online? How is that protected in a digital world? \nIn the webinar An Introduction to Data Privacy we will consider data privacy as we discuss its increased importance\, the collection and sharing of data\, and steps you can take to build and/or improve your data privacy program. We will also discuss the legal and contractual obligations surrounding data privacy and touch on the regulations on the horizon for 2023. This is a constantly evolving space\, but we will arm you with best practices and key components to focus on and discuss utilizing data privacy as a value-add. \nClaire Cucchi brings over 20 years of senior-level operations experience to Capstone\, a leading content creator for digital solutions\, children’s books\, and literacy programs for school libraries\, classrooms\, and at-home reading. Before joining Capstone\, where she currently serves as the company’s Data Privacy Administrator\, Claire designed\, implemented\, and maintained the data privacy program for Buncee\, a digital creation & communication tool for students\, teachers\, and administrators. There she ensured that Buncee maintained compliance with contractual obligations as well as federal\, state\, and international regulations. Claire continues to prioritize the protection of personal information by driving process change and privacy-driven policies\, in addition to supporting practices that provide transparency\, data minimization and limitation\, and an individual’s right to control the use of their personal information. Claire studied International Business and Finance at American University in Washington\, DC\, and also served as a council member for the Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System. \nThis webinar is $5 for MBPR members and students\, and $15 for nonmembers. When you register via the Eventbrite link\, you will receive further instructions on how to attend.

SUMMARY:May Webinar: Working with Illustrators: From Creative Brief to Final Illustration
DESCRIPTION:The art of illustration encompasses visual designs that tell stories or explain ideas in a wide range of formats. Writers and publishers need talented illustrators to bring their stories to life. What would a children’s picture book be without illustrations? A graphic novel without drawings? They wouldn’t be as effective—and they wouldn’t be as fun to read. \nJoin MBPR for our last webinar of the 2021-2022 season\, Working with Illustrators: From Creative Brief to Final Illustration. Our panel of publishing professionals\, including illustrator Sawyer Cloud\, agent Atlanta Japp\, and art director Danielle Carnito\, will discuss client relationships\, processes\, and best practices. \nSawyer Cloud is a freelance artist from Madagascar. Her passion for kids’ literature turned into a living when she couldn’t imagine any occupation other than creating pictures for children. She learned about the publishing industry through books and the internet. Through many independent projects\, she built a career as an illustrator\, securing representation with Advocate Art in 2020\, and has illustrated titles with major kids’ publishers. Sawyer loves sunny days and music. She dreams of owning a small cottage and traveling the world. She lives in Madagascar with her family and her two pets\, Arya the dog and Potter the cat. \nThree years ago\, Atlanta Japp joined the Advocate Art team at its New York City location. Since then\, she has ventured across the country to open the company’s first office in Los Angeles\, where she manages all West Coast clients\, overseeing more than a million dollars in illustration sales. Although she specializes in children’s publishing\, she also works with many licensing\, product design\, and advertising clients. Japp works closely with her artists to support them in consistently creating strong new work. Offering the best available and relevant talent to her clients\, she helps her artists climb the charts of many bestseller lists. When she is not searching for new talent\, Atlanta can be found enjoying the tasty tacos and beautiful beaches that California has to offer. \nDanielle Carnito is the Sr. Trade Art Director for Lerner Publishing Group in Minneapolis\, where she art directs a wide variety of books in several imprints—picture books through novels\, kindergarten through young adult\, fiction and nonfiction. She started her career in advertising\, then moved north\, changed careers to book publishing\, and has now spent quite a few happy years collaborating closely with illustrators\, editors\, designers\, agents\, and authors to create beautiful and award-winning books. Danielle has had the honor to hire and work with many talented illustrators\, including Floyd Cooper\, Victo Ngai\, Greg Christie\, and Selina Alko. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:March Webinar: Accessibility in Ebooks and Other Digital Products
DESCRIPTION:As the publishing industry takes a serious look at its diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) issues\, accessibility has become a frequent topic of conversation. Our March keynote speaker\, Laura Brady\, has long been at the forefront of that discussion. In her post Producing Accessible Ebooks\, Laura notes that “Fifteen percent of the world’s population uses assistive technology because of a disability. Eighty-five percent of the non-disabled market has a situational disability.” What does this mean for publishing? What is accessibility and why is it important? How is it implemented and how are we doing with that implementation? This discussion will guide us in getting up to speed so we can all be part of the conversation moving forward. \nLaura Brady is an accessibility expert whose priority is to always put users first. She is head of accessibility at Legible Inc.\, a browser-based reading system\, bringing more than 25 years of trade publishing experience to this role. For the past fifteen years\, Laura has worked in digital publishing\, where she has created and converted ebooks\, trained publishers on accessible workflows\, written a blog helping developers work more accessibly\, and consulted for services organizations that want to publish more inclusively. \nA sought-after consultant\, trainer\, and public speaker\, Laura advocates with government funders\, accessible library organizations\, and publisher associations for disability issues. Laura is also active in sharing knowledge\, building communities\, and calling stakeholders in through community groups such as #eprdctn\, the Accessible Publishing Summit\, and ebookcraft\, in addition to serving on the eBound and Accessible Books Consortium’s board of directors. Laura is widely recognized as one of the world’s experts in ebook accessibility and has created accessible poetry\, first languages\, math\, and children’s books\, along with others. In her free time\, Laura reads books and loves dogs. She hasn’t mastered doing both at once. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:November Webinar: Building a Great List: Art\, Science\, or Both?
DESCRIPTION:Join MBPR for a lively panel discussion on Building a Great List: Art\, Science\, or Both? In this event focused on list building and acquisitions\, several publishing professionals give us a peek behind the curtain into how their companies decide what to publish. \nSpecifically\, we’ll explore the role data plays in publishers’ strategies. Is data king\, or is it more of a suggestion? How is data most helpful in driving acquisitions? And where does data fall short or even lead us astray? \nErika Stevens is the editorial director at Coffee House Press\, where she has served in various editorial capacities for a decade. Erika currently acquires poetry\, nonfiction\, and fiction for Coffee House. Erika was previously in acquisitions at the University of Georgia Press and the University Press of Florida; she started her career in publishing at Duke University Press and UNC Press. She taught in the graduate program in book publishing at Portland State University and in the Sierra Nevada College MFA program. She dabbles in German-to-English translation and has freelanced widely for authors\, presses\, and nonprofit organizations. \nJosh Leventhal is the director of the Minnesota Historical Society Press. He began his career as an editor at Timber Press in Portland\, Oregon\, in the mid-1990s\, and after moving to Minnesota in 2000\, he worked for MBI Publishing\, Voyageur Press\, and an imprint of the Quarto Publishing Group before joining MNHS Press as an acquisitions editor in 2014. Working at large commercial publishers\, nonprofit publishers\, and small niche publishers in a range of subject areas\, Josh has navigated a variety of markets and publishing business models. He is also the author of more than 15 books. \nJenny Krueger is senior publishing director for Lerner Publications in Minneapolis. She has worked in publishing and product development for 15 years\, with extensive experience in educational publishing\, particularly for the school library and classroom markets. Jenny has developed series\, single titles\, and database products that serve K–12 learners\, including most recently Read WokeTM Books with Cicely Lewis and publishing partnerships with Crayola and Sesame Street. \nReservations for the event will open up this Wednesday\, October 27th and will close Tuesday\, November 9th at noon. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:September Webinar: Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in the Publishing Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for MBPR’s inaugural event of the season! As many of us well know\, the publishing industry has long struggled to accurately reflect the diversity of the world and failed to provide a welcoming place for all\, and many of the industry’s recent efforts demonstrate that people want change.  \nWe’ve invited keynote speaker Jennifer Baker\, senior editor at Amistad Books\, for a frank discussion about the ongoing concerns around diversity\, equity\, inclusion (DEI) efforts in publishing\, including what employers and employees can begin to think about deep-rooted issues. We’ll talk about some of the biggest concerns we face\, how we as individuals can learn from our mistakes\, and potential ways to move forward. No one\, including Jennifer\, can provide clear answers\, but by sharing experiences and examples of personal growth from her own work and from colleagues across the industry\, we’ll open a dialogue for exploring our shared responsibility in seeing sustained progress. \nReservations for the event will open up this Wednesday\, September 15 and will close Monday\, September 27th at noon. \nRegister here. \nJennifer Baker is a publishing professional of almost 20 years\, creator and host of the Minorities in Publishing podcast\, and faculty member of the MFA program in creative nonfiction at Bay Path University. SUMMARY:Event/Webinar: Content Marketing
DESCRIPTION:Event Summary \nExplore various ways publishers can use digital tools to create or supplement their products and develop audiences for their product lines. \nEvent Description \nThe days of paper-only publishing are long behind us. We’ve moved into the digital world\, creating products like ebooks\, supplemental digital materials\, or interactive product lines and marketing those products through social media\, blogs\, or online newsletters. Although we’ve made the leap\, we may still feel a bit unsettled. Indeed\, how best to maneuver\, strategize\, and operate in the digital realm—and make the most of its tools and measure their success—is an area that many of us in publishing still grapple with. And once we figure it out\, the technology advances and the possibilities change again. \nWhether you’re an editor\, marketer\, designer\, publishing executive\, or author\, we invite you to join us for this series of presentations on how all things digital has affected publishing strategies and practices both in normal times and during the pandemic. Two representatives from Capstone Publishing will share their company’s history with digital products\, how they have developed and marketed those products\, and their response to the pandemic. Shifting gears into marketing\, we’ll feature a presentation from the founder of Asterism and Co.\, a company that specializes in content marketing for book publishers\, who will explain how publishers can use the digital tools of content marketing to build and retain a community for their product lines. \nKristie Thoenen has been with Capstone since 2017 and is the Director of Digital Products where she leads the product management team and the growth strategy for Capstone’s digital products\, including PebbleGo and Capstone Interactive. Kristie has more than 20 years of experience in product management in the psychological and education publishing field. \nBeth Brezenoff joined Capstone in 2006 and held roles of Editorial Director and Director of Product Planning before being named Associate Publisher in 2020. Beth oversees the Capstone Content Team and is responsible for the content development\, strategy\, and execution of Capstone’s publishing list. \nChristine Dore Trant is the founder of Asterism and Co.\, a marketing agency with a mission to change the status quo of the publishing industry. By elevating individual publishers’ brand recognition and reader loyalty with content marketing\, Asterism and Co. works to enable their clients to not just sell more books but to publish stories worth telling.

SUMMARY:Adaptive Financial Communication Lessons: What Nature Tells Us about Sharing Resources
DESCRIPTION:Using an ecological lens\, this presentation can help you look at finance from different perspectives. If you are involved in money matters at any level\, you will come away with new insights on the communication of financial issues. If you are interested in the concept of sustainability and cross-department communication\, this is a presentation for you. \nWho is talking about money at your company or organization? Who isn’t? Who should be? And how are they talking about it? Is discourse around finances a strength or a weakness? Maybe you’re a project manager overseeing a production budget and want to advocate for more resources for a book project. Perhaps you work in operations and want to inspire creative solutions to a financial challenge. Maybe you are a staffer who wants better tools for advocating for yourself and your colleagues when it comes to company resources. Or perhaps you’re a department manager or director who has to share financial information with your team\, whether the news is good or bad. \nNo matter your role\, you are a part of the business culture (ecosystem) of your company. Join us at MBPR’s March luncheon\, where Allie Moen Wagstrom (she/her/hers) will discuss the ever-important soft skills of adaptive financial leadership\, providing insights from nature that will spur your creativity in approaching financial issues. Whether you need to take action on a budget problem or generate more communication between your departments\, Allie will provide steps to creating a more inclusive approach to finance. \nAbout the Presenter\nAllie Moen Wagstrom (she/her/hers) is a nonprofit practitioner and trainer with over fifteen years of experience in program\, financial\, and administrative management. She specializes in ecological approaches to strategic partnerships\, business strategy\, nonprofit management\, and leadership. Always curious\, she is working on a Master’s of Science in biomimicry. SUMMARY:Best Practices for Working with Freelancers
DESCRIPTION:Publishers have been working with and relying on those in the gig economy — freelancers — since before the gig economy was even a thing. When those relationships go well\, freelancers can play a vital role in ensuring that a publisher’s design\, editorial\, and other processes run smoothly and efficiently. Budgets and deadlines are met\, quality books are produced\, everyone’s happy! But what happens when expectations collide\, communication slips or the hired-out work is not up to par? And if you’ve never worked with\, or as\, a freelancer\, what are some best practices for getting started? Join MBPR for this January’s luncheon and listen in as four panelists seasoned in the art of working with or as freelancers discuss tips and tools\, strategies and skills for creating and maintaining healthy freelancer-publisher relationships. The panel discussion will close with time for Q&A. \nAbout Our Panelists\nLaura J. Westlund is managing editor of the University of Minnesota Press. She has also worked as a freelance translator\, writer\, editor\, and proofreader. Along with her work in publishing\, she is an Art Hound for Minnesota Public Radio and a tour guide at the Weisman Art Museum. \nJames Kegley is currently the art director for 1517 Media’s line of trade books. Previously\, he spent twelve years at the Quarto Publishing Group as a design manager\, working on book design as well as marketing materials and branding. In these positions\, he has worked with numerous freelance designers\, illustrators\, and photographers. In 2018 he ventured into the freelance design field himself\, focused primarily on book design and layout. He is a graduate of the College of Visual Arts (long live CVA). \nKim Winscher is a freelance graphic designer. She graduated from the Minneapolis Arts Institute with a focus on graphic design. She started her career as a design manager/art director for Quayside Publishing before becoming a freelancer. She has been freelancing for more than ten years. Past and current clients include Latitude\, the New Normal\, Hogarth International\, Bare Honey\, and the Quarto Group. \nMadeleine Vasaly is a former in-house and current freelance copyeditor\, developmental editor\, and proofreader (among other things). Most of her clients are publishers of trade nonfiction books\, but she also works with packagers\, self-publishing authors\, nonprofits\, creative agencies\, and other people who work with words. In addition to her freelance business\, she is the senior editor and co-head of the nonprofit news and culture site Twin Cities Geek and a board member with the Professional Editors Network.

SUMMARY:Creative Workflow Solutions
DESCRIPTION:In publishing\, we’re always looking for ways to do things faster\, better\, and cheaper. The ability to work efficiently can have a direct impact on the bottom line. Our group of presenters will walk us through four different tools that can help with that quest. \nTopics will include:\n\nUsing Microsoft Word’s style templates to format manuscripts in preparation for typesetting and production.\nUsing InDesign’s new feature to incorporate marked-up PDF changes.\nUsing Airtable as a flexible project management tool.\nUsing Pressbooks for increased book production.\n\nRepresenting a variety of organizations\, our presenters will share insights to make work more efficient across many areas of publishing—whether it’s editorial\, production\, publicity\, or project management! \nAmy Fitzgerald is an editorial director for Carolrhoda Books at Lerner Publishing Group in Minneapolis. She manages the imprint’s middle-grade and young adult novel lists\, overseeing each book’s life cycle from acquisition through editing and production. She will be presenting on the benefits of Word’s style templates. \nDavid Farr is ImageSmythe’s principal of graphic design and art direction. He brings more than thirty years of publishing experience to his design and production work. He founded ImageSmythe in 1986 to provide graphic art production services for the advertising\, direct mail\, magazine\, and book publishing fields. Farr is also starting his twenty-sixth year as an adjunct professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, where he now specializes in teaching the Adobe Creative Cloud applications. Having dealt with pixels for much of his professional career\, he has returned to the darkroom to develop his landscape and street photography\, shot using large-format cameras using traditional black-and-white film. He will be presenting on InDesign’s new capabilities for smoothly incorporating changes from a marked-up PDF. \nKat Sanborn is a Minnesota transplant with twenty years’ experience in the publishing industry—in sales\, marketing\, and publicity\, sometimes combined! Llewellyn Worldwide is her professional base of operations as a senior publicist and public relations representative. She has served on publishing educational panels and given talks on book promotion both on her company’s behalf and as a publishing professional. In San Francisco\, where she worked remotely for Llewellyn before making the move to Minnesota\, she was the programs chair for the Book Promotion Forum\, an organization devoted to education about the publicity\, promotion\, marketing\, and distribution of books. She will be presenting on her use of the professional project management tool Airtable. \nLayne Johnson is the senior project manager for the book imprints at 1517 Media here in Minneapolis. She has been working in book production for the past five years and has a passion for organization\, communication\, and schedules (think Gantt charts). Her attention to detail and drive to produce high-quality books in an efficient and effective manner is worked out through managing and using external resources such as Pressbooks. Her team uses traditional typesetting methods\, along with Pressbooks\, to achieve greater efficiency and increased output of books into the world.
