SUMMARY:With a Little Help from My Friends: Editors\, Authors\, and the Art of Developmental Editing
DESCRIPTION:Everyone can see the finished product on bookstore shelves. Some see a manuscript as it makes its way towards a publisher. But between the submitted manuscript and the finished product\, some of the most intensive work publishers do with a book is also the most hidden. In some cases\, this work is a short process; in others\, it’s long and involved. \nEither way\, substantial developmental editing — and the relationship between author and editor — is a central ingredient in the lives of books\, publishers\, and readers. But in a time of increased workloads\, towers of manuscripts\, and fast-approaching deadlines\, the process of developmental editing can be a tricky one to master and carry out in a substantive yet efficient manner. \nJoin us for an opportunity to see onto the editor’s table and engage in discussion with three highly respected developmental editors working with nonfiction\, fiction\, and children’s literature. It’s a great opportunity to pick their brains and hear from them about good methods\, approaches\, considerations\, and the difficult choices that lie along the road that leads from the submission envelope to the new release table. \nPresenters\nPatricia M. Stockland is the Editor in Chief of Lerner Publishing Group. She has been an editor and author for the past fifteen years and holds an M.A. in Literature and a B.A. in English as well as minors in Spanish and European Studies. In addition to numerous poems\, scholarly articles\, and marketing pieces\, she has written more than sixty books for children and young adults\, garnering national and regional awards\, including a nomination as a MAGS scholar. \nAs the managing director at Milkweed Editions\, Patrick Thomas oversees marketing and promotion\, finance\, and acquires and edits books for the nonfiction list. He studied English and Environmental Studies at St. Olaf College. \nLinda White is a writer\, reader\, editor\, reviewer\, promoter\, and teacher. She has worked in publishing for 20 years in both editorial and marketing. She reviews regularly for Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. She runs BookMania\, offering services for authors and publishers\, and The Publishing Bones\, a website for writers. Her goal is always to help authors: to create their best work\, bring it to readers\, and be recognized for it. She is\, unabashedly\, a complete\, utter book freak.
