Red Line Editorial is looking for a full-time Production Editor to join our staff of print and online publishing professionals.
RLE creates high-quality books for publishers on a variety of subjects. Most of our books are nonfiction titles created for students in grades K–12, but we also work in a number of other genres. We are seeking a Production Editor to work on law textbook production and assist with other production and editorial tasks.
Our Production Editor will fill an essential role on our staff. Duties will include:
–Book production using established templates and styles
–Book layout using Adobe InDesign with an InCopy workflow, including text formatting and image placement
–Input changes into InDesign files from marked-up PDFs
–Manipulate and color-correct images and graphics using Photoshop and Illustrator
–Create charts, maps, or other graphical elements as assigned
–Create marketing images as requested
–Cross-check page turns
–Developmental editing and project management of assigned manuscripts, with oversight from other editors
–Coordinate and communicate with authors, vendors, and clients on assigned projects
–Perform editorial tasks including photo research, proofreading, fact-checking, index creation
The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:
–BA in English, journalism, mass communication, or similar; degrees in other humanities fields, such as history, will also be considered
–Strong computer skills, including Adobe InDesign experience
–Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
–Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition and MLA
–Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
–Ability to work independently and in a team environment
–Excellent oral and written communication skills
–Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to adapt based on client requests

Senior Editor – ZEST Books (Minneapolis, MN)
The Senior Editor proposes, acquires, and develops trade titles in ZEST Books, a young adult nonfiction imprint. The Senior Editor monitors marketplace trends to identify high-interest topics. The Senior Editor is responsible for editing and quality control on all titles in the imprint. The Senior Editor communicates and collaborates with Integrated Creative Services (ICS) colleagues to effectively manage the program to deliver on seasonal goals. The Senior Editor participates in company’s social media efforts.
This position is based out of our downtown Minneapolis headquarters, with the possibility of hybrid.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements a strong vision and identity for ZEST Books that is consistent with the publisher’s intent as well as within the marketplace.
- Develops, edits, and produces 10-12 titles per year. This work involves acquisitions, contract negotiations, tracking, editing, cross reads, and production checks. Manages editorial tasks delegated to the editorial assistant, other staff, or freelancers to ensure that tasks are delivered on deadline and meet quality standards.
- Collaborates closely with ICS colleagues to meet seasonal deadlines. Proactively communicates and problem-solves to overcome schedule challenges.
- Analyzes historic sales data and reviews at regular imprint meetings. Analyzes what causes strong sales of ZEST and acquires titles with that information in mind.
- Monitors blogs, tweets, and other social media that discuss children’s books, children’s book authors/illustrators, and the use of digital content in the educational and trade publishing spheres. Routinely contributes content to the company’s blog.
- Develops, maintains, and communicates broad knowledge of young adult nonfiction and digital trends, as well as of the work, awards, and reviews of our competitors’ titles.
- Networks with agents, authors, illustrators, and digital content creators to generate publishing ideas.
- Ensures that relevant marketing materials—tip sheets, cover copy, catalog copy—reflect the vision and identity of the list and are delivered on schedule.
- Travels to and participates in relevant conferences throughout the year.
- Provides regular updates on progress toward seasonal goals, indicating any challenges to meeting targets.
- Perform other related business duties assigned by immediate supervisor and/or other management as required.
